Frypan

The cabin kitchen had one window, and it looked out over a lake that didn’t move unless the wind insisted. Morning arrived slowly there. Coffee first. Then the sound of something meant for a pan.

The old skillet had seen better decades. Eggs stuck. Bacon argued. Pancakes surrendered halfway through the turn and folded in quiet defeat.

From the lower cupboard—where useful things go to wait—I found a wide, steady pan. Clean surface. Good weight. The kind that doesn’t make promises, just keeps them.

“Pan’s not the problem,” said the caretaker, leaning in the doorway. “It’s always the pan.”
He nodded toward it. “That one won’t fight you.”
